This song reminds me of my brother, who excelled at work but because his wife had become unpleasant would try to work all the holidays and overtime he could get, plus he would take the longest route home after work so as to shorten the amount of time he had to spend with her. They have since divorced after she left him.
Take the Long Way Home (Supertramp song)
This song takes me back to when I was young and free and had none of the responsibilities or regrets of what is now my middle age. This song has become my mantra. As a single person, I can relate to the lyrics, "When the time comes to settle down, who's to blame if you're not around."
Excellent dynamic range, bright and crisply clear. A great album, an unbelievable album from MOFI. I have owned the early pressing, a couple of copies, and the CD.
Breakfast in America Review
A lot of us, including me most of the time, are a bit lost. We think we need to famous, first verse about Romeo, . The second verse, joke of the neighborhood, is about not knowing who you are or pretending to be someone else, disregarding your own feelings. The third verse, but there are times, is about almost realizing that we do not live our life in the right way.
We, this time in past tense, took the long way home. Roger Hodgson's debut solo DVD was titled Take the Long Way Home, Live in Montreal. It was released in Canada in 2006, where it went to #1 and sold over a million copies. The DVD was released worldwide in 2007 and is Gold in France.

With Breakfast in America, Supertramp had a genuine blockbuster hit, topping the charts for four weeks in the U.S. and selling millions of copies worldwide; by the 1990s, the album had sold over 18 million units across the world. Although their previous records had some popular success, they never even hinted at the massive sales of Breakfast in America. Then again, Supertramp's earlier records weren't as pop-oriented as Breakfast. The majority of the album consisted of tightly written, catchy, well-constructed pop songs, like the hits 'The Logical Song', 'Take the Long Way Home', and 'Goodbye Stranger.'.

In a retrospective review for AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine praised the album's "tightly written, catchy, well-constructed pop songs" and described it as the band's "high-water mark".

2002 reissueOn 11 June 2002 A&M Records reissued Breakfast in America with full original album art, plus the label art from side one recreated on the CD. It was mastered from the original master tapes by Greg Calbi and Jay Messina at Sterling Sound, New York, 2002. The reissue was supervised by Bill Levenson with art direction by Vartan and design by Mike Diehl, with production coordination by Beth Stempel.
