The tour group is taken hostage in the Blue Room by white nationalist Carl Killick, but Cale escapes to search for Emily, who was separated during the tour. Retiring Head of Presidential Detail Martin Walker brings Sawyer to the PEOC beneath the White House Library. Inside, Walker kills Sawyer's detail, revealing himself as the leader of the attack, apparently seeking vengeance against Sawyer for a botched mission in Iran that killed his Marine son the year prior.

Along with Eckhart and Butler — in one of his best performances in years — there's the always reliable Morgan Freeman, who takes a bit of a demotion from his previous roles as God and a U.S. president to portray the Speaker of the House. In addition, Angela Bassett is equally convincing as the head of the Secret Service, and Oscar winner Melissa Leo excels as the tough-as-nails secretary of defense, who endures very rough treatment by her North Korean captors. Walker brings in ex-NSA analyst Skip Tyler to hack the PEOC's defense system but requires Sawyer to activate the nuclear football.

Though filmed over a year ago, "Olympus Has Fallen" benefits from recent international tensions, since the attack on the White House is masterminded by a group of North Korean terrorists. Walker, blaming Iran rather than Sawyer for his son's death, demands Sawyer use the football to launch nuclear missiles against various Iranian cities. Tyler inadvertently triggers the tunnel explosives and is vaporized.

It delivers some excellent visuals and a few surprising twists that add beautifully to the suspense. While the head terrorist role could easily have degenerated into a one-dimensional cartoonvillain, Rick Yune is terrific as the chillingly charming — yet completely lethal — Yang, the mastermind of the entire plot. Fuqua and his writing team of Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt gave us a nice twist — a smart cinematic gift, really — as that forementioned "tragic event" (which I will not spoil by revealing) becomes a clever plot surprise. It's always good when something you KNOW is about to happen in a movie doesn't occur the way you think it will. This film's title comes from the fictional Secret Service code ("Olympus") for the White House, which is being led by a very President Kennedy-esque Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart). But the true lead actor in this constantly gripping tale is Gerard Butler as Mike Banning, once the top presidential protecter for the Asher family, until a tragic event led him to be transferred to a pedestrian Secret Service job in the Treasury Department.
Additional crew and production details
Emily runs outside and waves off the incoming fighter planes with a presidential flag, calling off the air strike. Sawyer survives thanks to a pocket watch once belonging to Abraham Lincoln that stopped Walker's bullet. A bomb is detonated in the United States Capitol, sending Washington, D.C. Finnerty escorts Raphelson to an underground command center in the Pentagon, while Vice President Alvin Hammond is taken aboard Air Force One. A paramilitary team led by ex-Delta Force operative Emil Stenz infiltrates the White House, kills the Secret Service, and seizes the building.
Even though this movie is completely derivative, it still ends up being fun. Banning disables Kang's communications and forces him into bringing his operatives into the open when they attempt to execute McMillan in front of the media, killing more of them before Kang retreats to the bunker. With their numbers dwindling rapidly, Kang fakes his and Asher's death by sacrificing several of his commandos and the remaining hostages in a helicopter explosion. Hundreds of Australians, New Zealanders and military personnel watched in London as the Duke left a floral tribute of red poppies and white flowers early on Wednesday morning. The Royal family also paid their respects to the fallen on social media.
Released on June 28, 2013, by Sony Pictures Releasing, White House Down received mixed reviews from critics toward the screenwriting and the clichéd storyline, although the performances and action sequences were praised. The film grossed over $205 million worldwide at the box office, against a budget of $150 million. White House Down was one of two films released in 2013 that dealt with a terrorist attack on the White House; the other, Olympus Has Fallen, was released three months earlier. The film was released in the United States on March 22, 2013, by FilmDistrict, and grossed $170 million against a $70 million production budget. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised Fuqua's direction and Butler's performance, but criticized the overt violence and screenplay. The film series will continue, as Butler has signed on for three more feature films. With plans to expand into a franchise, producers have various foreign, local-language, TV spin-offs in development. A sequel, titled London Has Fallen, was released on March 4, 2016, with the principal cast members reprising their roles, and a third film, Angel Has Fallen, was released on August 23, 2019. O'Connor said Sunday that the president returned a negative test in the morning and will "safely return to public engagement and presidential travel." While "Olympus Has Fallen" breaks no major new ground in the political thriller genre, Fuqua has directed a sharp, very taut adventure that keeps you engrossed from start to finish.
Olympus Has Fallen was directed by Antoine Fuqua, based on a script by Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt in their first screenwriting effort. The production company Millennium Films acquired the spec script in March 2012, and Gerard Butler was cast later in the month as the star of the film.[4] The rest of the characters were cast throughout June and July. After finding Connor hiding in the building's walls and sneaking him to safety, preventing Kang from using him to force Asher to reveal his Cerberus code, Banning kills many commandos, including Forbes. Army Chief of Staff General Edward Clegg convinces Trumbull to order an aerial assault on the White House.
Cale kills most of the mercenaries and frees the hostages, one of whom bludgeons Killick. Sawyer attacks Walker, but in the fight, Walker uses Sawyer's handprint to activate the football and shoots Sawyer. Before Walker can finally launch the missiles, Cale crashes a reinforced Chevrolet Suburban into the Oval Office and kills him with the car's mini-gun.

The film stars Gerard Butler (who also co-produced), Aaron Eckhart, and Morgan Freeman with Angela Bassett, Robert Forster, Cole Hauser, Ashley Judd, Melissa Leo, Dylan McDermott, Radha Mitchell, and Rick Yune in supporting roles. The plot depicts a North Korean-led guerrilla assault on the White House, and focuses on disgraced Secret Service agent Mike Banning's efforts to rescue U.S. White House Down is a 2013 American political action thriller film directed by Roland Emmerich and written by James Vanderbilt.
“Olympus Has Fallen” is a phenomenal actioner with very timely implications and a frightening “what if” premise. Mike Banning is framed for the attempt to assassinate President Allan Trumbull by a rogue private military company and must race against time to clear his name while uncovering the real threat. The record was released on March 15, 2013 via Relativity Music Group label.
Gormless, guilty-pleasure action thriller, best viewed as the Die-Hard-Hits-The-White-House affair it so clearly wants to be. After a failed attempt to save First Lady Margaret Asher, disgraced Secret Service agent Mike Banning must take action after a North Korean terrorist group seize control of the White House. Banning uses his inside knowledge to rescue President Benjamin Asher from his kidnappers. "Has Fallen" is a series of action-thriller films following the adventures of Secret Service Agent Mike Banning, President of the United States Benjamin Asher, and Vice President of the United States Allan Trumbull.
Banning joins the White House's defenders during KUF's initial assault.
So when a North Korean terrorist plot can be executed with frightening precision — circumventing the seemingly impenetrable defenses surrounding the U.S. president and everyone around him — it boggles the mind.
