For a 10-gallon I wouldn’t add any more than 5 adult fish. Platies should be fine, but just a reminder that all situations are unique and so are the personalities of bettas. Carolyn Stoffels July 2, 2018 Hi, I have a fish tank, 2 & 1/2 gallons with one male betta in it. Does anyone here think just one ghost shrimp would be happy living in a tank that size with my male betta as a tank mate? Bryan April 16, 2018 They still have large flowing fins, therefore it’s not recommended.

Your tank water must be through one complete cycle before your betta fish are added . Having a reliable filtration system is crucial as well. About 25 percent of the water in the tank should be renewed weekly – NEVER do a 100 percent water change.

The hyacinth flower is small, sweet, and vividly purple. This is another classic name, but rarer than names like Violet or Lilac. Hyacinth would fit a more timid female betta, but it can work for a betta of any shape and personality.

He is very active and has a huge appetite so doesn’t seem to be unwell at all. I did a 50% water change and everything tested within normal today, but now his tail fin has a small hole and seems frayed at the end. He does have a couple tank mates and everyone seems to get along well. The tank is 10gal heated and filtered with live plants. Bryan February 25, 2018 Yes, betta fish are known to lose some vividness in their coloration as they get older.

Keep up on the partial water changes and all is well unless for deeper cleanings due to other circumstances. Perform 20-35% partial water changes in their tank at evenly spaced intervals. This will depend on the size of your tank, and whether or not it is filtered.

This makes them an ideal fish to live with a betta. Guppies are also content living on their own, so adding one as a tank mate is easier than schooling fish. In order to thrive, betta fish should have 5-gallons of water for their habitat. Adding certain tank mates starts to detract from the necessary environment. Some companions will need more than 5-gallons to thrive on their own, without the addition of a betta.
They come up to the surface frequently and can jump out of the water quite well. Plants and other items in the tank can be gently scrubbed and rinsed with fresh water. At this time, half of the tank water can be dumped out and replaced with new filtered water.
Mary Smith April 10, 2019 I have a Half Moon Red and Blue Betta named Mory, and one small very active white snail named Flash. Mory seems very happy, keeps building bubble nests. Hoping to eventually move to 10 Gallon, when budget allows.

I have seen shrimp attack a larger guppy as well once they got a taste for them. For those who are seeing multiple unexplained guppy deaths.. They are prone to several illnesses including the dreaded “guppy disease” which kills in days and is impossible to treat.
You need to know beforehand what you want to get out of the experience. Use very fine smooth gravel or sand for substrate. Water should be soft, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (about 6.5 to 7.0), and at a temperature of approximately 75 degrees F .

He seems to be doing fine, but I just wanted to know if this was a serious thing and how to treat it if it is. Velvet is highly contagious to other community fish too, especially in sororities. Treat community tanks even if the other fish appear to be healthy and without signs of the disease . Velvet is caused by ongoing stressors, poor water conditions, and prolonged exposure to colder than tropical water temperatures.
